1 – Writing Fantasy As Concept
The seed of this world I planted a long time ago. But as it goes, or as I go, it wasn't enough to have a world with some cool stuff in it. Getting into the theory of what causes the reader to experience the fantastic has taken quite a bit of reading around this question: "what is fantasy"? Getting into the philosophical side of what defines the genre of fantasy was unexpected but inevitable. From my reading so far, I have settled on the following definition of fantasy. Fantasy or being in a state of the fantastic is [...]
2 – Reading To Write
The list of books I want to read to flesh out the world is getting so long. I call this my "Reading to Write" list. Mostly books on topics not necessarily directly associated with "fantasy." Currently, I am reading three books that explain how humans form their thoughts and conceptions. Still, more importantly they explain how we end up thinking about a world made for multiple creatures in languages and ideologies specific to humans only. Ambitious? yes, impossible? Also maybe yes.. . But nevertheless, my plan with the books is to map each one onto 5 years of John Hawkwood’s life starting in 1360. To date i’ve mapped out the years 1386-93 and today I finished mapping out 1360-1364. So now I know roughly how to begin and how to end. The next hurdle is to map out and detail the years 1365-1384. I’m cross reading 6 main books on the topic. Takes about a week to do 5 years. My view on the world that we live in is heavily influenced by [...]
